Why is H.E.A.R.T. important to the Houston community?
Simply put, without employment opportunities provided by organizations like H.E.A.R.T., adults with developmental disabilities must rely exclusively on public resources for support - resources that are dwindling. H.E.A.R.T. helps create jobs even in a tough economy and helps relieve the strain on our public resources.
In addition, these individuals represent a virtually untapped resource of eager and trainable employees who can provide services throughout the Houston community. H.E.A.R.T. Executive Director Jane Cummins says it best, “We focus on unlocking the potential of these individuals, rather than focusing on seeing their limitations.”
When working at public venues, H.E.A.R.T. trainees are also a force in the community for raising awareness about adults with developmental disabilities and dispelling the belief of some that they are not capable of contributing to the community. The growing list of those employing H.E.A.R.T. Vending and Concessions demonstrates the truth of this statement.
